Everyone has heard a few bits of wisdom from others before that seem more superstitious than sound; it's a part of human nature to learn and pass along knowledge from one generation to the next. These tales and traditions are spread from person to person, rather than from a book or school education. This kind of knowledge is referred to as generational knowledge, as it is often spread from parents to children, or grandparents to grandchildren, etc.
Encyclopedia Britannica defines the term old wives' tales as the following:
"Traditional beliefs that are not based on fact. They are a form of superstition or cultural folklore, often incorporating handed-down beliefs about health and medicine."
While it is important to keep in mind common sense and not fully believe in these tales, I find it an important study of human behavior and knowledge that can help you learn and grow as a person. To this end, I will be posting about the meaning, history, and possible implementation of old wives' tales here on my blog. I look forward to learning with you.
